The tropical storm Irene has passed us by and left sunshine in its wake. A couple of the farmers raise livestock or grow crops in eastern Mass. right in the path of the wild weather. Stillman's Farm for instance had trouble with the voracious wind with an appetite for corn destruction. It knocked down the stalks like they were.. well like they were stalks of corn! Rad Urban Farm's crops fared well in part because they are shielded by the houses all around them. However, the wind did snap a bunch of basil. Regardless of all the troubles and scares the farmers all had tons of produce! They brought some beautiful specimens of veggies that were nice and clean after the rainstorm gave them a nice shower.
There was no music this week but some of our sponsors came out to give consultations and show off their stuff. One tent was set up for a our sponsor United Solar Associates. They were answering questions about installing renewable energy sources on roofs and around homes. We were also joined by Mass Save, the Lexington Board of Health, and the Lexington Health Division.
One fruit I noticed all over the market was peaches. There were fresh peach smoothies from Sidehill Farm, and bins from multiple farmers were filled to the brim with fresh and beautiful peaches. Charlton Orchards was selling a huge basket of 22-25 pounds of peaches. They are a great snack! Especially because you can eat them seconds after having purchased them.
School is starting and our summer high school volunteers are headed back to school. A big thank you to them and all their hard work making our market a great place to be for customers and farmers!
